REAL ID Hearing

From the Billings Gazette: "Republican and Democratic senators alike railed Thursday against the cost and potential privacy problems of the Real ID Act, but a Homeland Security official insisted that the department has borne much of the expense for new driver's license standards."

The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs held a hearing yesterday, "The Impact of Implementation: A Review of the REAL ID Act and the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative." The hearing webpage includes an archived webcast and prepared testimony of witnesses.

Senator Tester issued a press release on the hearing. Montana senators Baucus and Tester co-sponsored bill S.717, the "Identification Security Enhancement Act of 2007," which would repeal the REAL ID Act. The Department of Homeland Security website includes more information on REAL ID.

Intersting that these hearings are now not just about REAL ID, but also the 'Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative'. This is essentially REAL ID by a different name, and creates the equivalent of internal passports between the US, Mexico, and Canada. It also requires RFID chips in drivers licenses, similar to the ones they put in passports now. Will be interesting to see how Schweitzer feels about these.
