From the Missoulian: "If you drive to Canada but don't want to pay for or carry around a passport once stricter requirements go into effect next year, the government has a cheaper and easier alternative for you.
"The 'passport card,' which you can apply for now, will be far less expensive than a regular passport. And it will be the size of a credit card. But it can only be used for international travel by car or boat, not on airplanes."
The State Department website has information on the new Passport Card option. The site includes responses to frequently asked questions and general information on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

Canadian Border Rules to Change January 31, 2008
From the Department of Homeland Security press release: "The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reminds travelers that beginning January 31, 2008, border crossers will be asked to present documents denoting citizenship and identity when entering the United States through land and sea ports of entry. This change primarily affects United States and Canadian citizens, who have previously been permitted entry by oral declaration alone, and marks the transition toward standard and consistent documents for all travelers entering the country. It is also the start of a more robust and concerted public education campaign, intended to inform travelers of document requirements which will be implemented next year."
The DHS website includes details about changes to U.S. land border crossing procedures. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection website describes acceptable documentation for border crossing. The State Department website has more information on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
