From the Missoulian: "The U.S. Senate on Wednesday shot down two more attempts to increase federal funding to help low-income households pay heating bills this winter.
"Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., who voted for the more generous proposal, called its rejection an 'outrage' and 'a slap in the face to Montanans who are staring down the barrel at some hard choices this winter: to heat their homes or to put food on the table'."
The Senate failed to pass Senate Amendment 2194, "To provide for appropriations for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program," because it failed to reach the 60 "yea" votes needed to override the point of order (in roll call vote 270).
The other item was Senate Amendment 2253, "To increase appropriations for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program by $1,276,000,000, with an across-the-board reduction," which was rejected 53-46 (roll call vote 271).
