Mortgage and Foreclosure Assistance

From the New York Times: "The Senate on Thursday moved to stabilize the battered housing market by approving a bill to provide tax breaks for home builders and other businesses, a $7,000 tax credit for buyers of foreclosed homes, $150 million for counseling borrowers and $4 billion for local governments to buy foreclosed properties."

The Senate passed H.R. 3221, which covers energy issues as well as housing reform, with roll call vote 96. The Senate version of the bill differs significantly from the version passed by the House (the various versions of the bill are available through THOMAS). As a result, the bill will be reviewed by a conference committee.

The next plan for mortgage assistance announced by the Bush Administration is available on the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) website. The plan is an expansion of FHA Secure.
