From the Forest Service: "The FY 2007 President's Budget proposes to reauthorize the Secure Rural Schools program for another five years. To help fund this initiative, the Administration recommends selling a limited number of acres of National Forest System lands around the nation. Lands that are potentially eligible have been identified and are displayed in a table at the following link Lands Potentially Eligible for Sale by State and National Forest."
The Forest Service page describing the potential sale outlines the proposed land for sale, provides maps for some forests, and links to more information on the "Payments to States" program. The list of Forest Service lands "potentially eligible for sale" lists the Montana parcels by township, range, and section. A map of the relevant land in the Bitterroot National Forest is available, and maps for the other Montana forests should be forthcoming. In the meantime, you can get an idea of the intended sale lands by searching the Montana Topographic Map Finder by township, range, and section. This tool is provided by the Montana Natural Resource Information System (NRIS).
